While staying at Undara we joined a 'Wildlife at Sunset Tour" to see the micro bats. This tour departs reception just before sunset and you are driven through the bush in a small bus spotting wildlife. Our guide was very disappointing - he drove through the bushland very quickly and beeped the horn so that the kangaroos and/or wallabies would pop their heads up. The grass was quite long and he asked us to let him know when we spotted something so he could stop for photographs.
The sunset tour included bubbly with cheese, fruit and crackers to relax and enjoy the sunset. This was set up on a table beside the bus and a great opportunity to chat to the rest of our tour group.
After dark we headed down to the opening of the lava tube to see the micro bats fly out in search of food. This particular tube is a breeding area as well as nursery for these tiny bats. Taking photos of the bats leaving the caves is quite restricted so as not to disturb them too much with the flash from the camera. Thousands leave the tube each night, and from December to March the Pythons and Brown Tree Snakes hang from the tree branches and strike out at the bats to capture a meal as they fly past. We have only seen photos of this as there were no snakes around during our tour (thank goodness).
