Gunnedah

We have friends who live in Gunnedah , NSW and they helped make our visit to this lovely country town very enjoyable. We stayed at Gunnedah Tourist Caravan Park on Henry Street and only a couple of blocks from the the main business area of town - Conadilly Street. Gunnedah is known as the Koala Capital of Australia and a number of these beautiful creatures live in the trees around town. I was on the lookout the whole time but the only Koalas I saw were in the Waterways Wildlife Park on the outskirts of town.

Some of the places we visited around Gunedah include:

• Pensioners Hill – sculptures and totem poles and great views of the town
• Porcupine Lookout – slightly higher and views all around. Wonderful panoramic of the Breeza Plains with is one of the most fertile growing areas in Australia
• Old information centre which is being remodelled into a Dorethea McKellar exhibition centre of her life and art – she was born in Gunnedah and wrote the famous poem “My Country”
• ChatttaChino – a new café and licensed eating place on the corner of Condadilly Street and Henry Street. 
• Gunnedah Pub – nightly meal special  – lovely seating area near bar with stools, lounges and open fire
• Bitter Suite - cafe on the main road  
• Visitor Information Centre is just off the main road with RV and long vehicle parking out front. An art gallery inside which was displaying the latest entrants in a local art competition. All paintings, sculptures and pottery were for sale
• Wolsley Park – public toilets in the park with poems being broadcast through the speakers.  Miner’s statue out front
• Parkview Hotel on the corner of Conadilly Street and Chandos Street (across from Wosley Park). $8 lunch special with a choice of about 5 meals  Very popular.   
• Gunnedah Rural Museum on Oxley Highway - one of Australia's largest collections of early agriculture and transport memorabilia 
• Waterways Wildlife Park, Oxley Highway - Koalas, peacock, kangaroos, wallabies, emu, ostrich, deer, wombat, echidna, dingo, various birds, lizards, eagles etc
• Golf Club - new deck with views over the course 
• Courthouse Hotel for dinner - very nice Meal - eat in small dining room or in the bar area.  

Showground has an RV caravan area – they open the whole showground for caravans and motor homes during Agquip. There is also a free camping area along the Namoi River  - Cohens Bridge Rest Area. This is a very busy country town with agriculture and mining the main industries.
