Mildura is a large city located in Victoria across the Murray River from NSW and close to the South Australian border. Most of Australia's dried fruit comes from this area as well as other produce - almonds, pistachios, olives, asparagus etc. Wine is produced locally in this Mediterranean climate - available from cellar doors and a number of restaurants in town.
We found the food wonderful and there are plenty of restaurants to choose from or you can join one of wining and dining tours available to explore the district. The Mildura area has a fascinating local history - we visited Rio Vista, an historic house overlooking the Murray River on the edge of Mildura city.
The Murray River is wide and flows continuously - a focal point of the city. You can take a trip on one of the historic paddle steamers to see the attractions along the river or hire one of the many houseboats available from various companies along the Murray. The Murray River is also popular for swimming, fishing and canoeing.
