Hughenden

Hughenden is a small town on the Flinders Highway west of Charters Towers in Queensland. We called in for an overnighter and ended up staying for three nights as there is so much to see around the area. We stayed at Hughenden Allen Terry Caravan Park which is off the main highway - very quiet and very welcoming - the park is managed by Darryl and Jodie Coward who are very friendly country folk.  

Here are some of the things we did while staying in Hughenden:

• Visit Porcupine Gorge and see Pyramid Rock - about 65 kilometres from town
• Mount Walker - six lookouts with great views of the surrounding countryside - what they call a Jump Up
• Flinders Discovery Centre (at the Visitor Information Centre) - Hughie, the seven metre-tall Muttaburrasaurus, plus an impressive fossil collection  
• FJ Holden Cafe for a famous Holden Burger
• Sculptures around town - Check out all the windmill blades used in these artworks
• Cheng's Chinese Restaurant - family owned
• Robert Gray Memorial Park beside the Flinders River
• Eco Walk along the Banks of Flinders River.   

You can access fuel 24 hours a day from the self-serve petrol station in the main street - accessed by use of a credit card. We had a very relaxing and enjoyable stay in this friendly, outback country town.
