Description

Mount Kaputar National Park is a national park in Australia, surrounding the proximities of Mount Kaputar, a volcano active between 17 and 21 million years ago. It is located 50 km (31 mi) east of Narrabri and 570 km (354 mi) northwest of Sydney. Millions of years of erosion have since carved the volcanic region into the lava terraces, volcanic plugs, and dykes of Nandewar Range. The central feature of the region is Mount Kaputar, the park's namesake, which rises to an altitude of 1,510 m (4,954 ft). The 360 degree view from the summit of the mountain encompasses about 1/10 of New South Wales' area or 80,000 km2 (31,000 sq mi).

Mount Kaputar National Park is only a short drive from Narrabri in NSW and a must see when visiting the area

Our first trip was to Sawn Rock in Mount Kaputar National Park, accessed via the Narrabri - Bingara Road (Killarney Gap Road). The turn off to Sawn Rock is about 35 ks from town into a great parking area with room for a couple of buses or cars towing caravans. Toilet and picnic tables are provided for visitors. The path to the rock face is sealed with a viewing platform at the end of the track to marvel at a giant rock wall of organ pipes.

The second part of our trip to Mount Kaputar National Park was along another road from Narrabri - Kaputar Road and about 52 kilometres to the Mount Kaputar Viewing Platform.

As you enter the park the road is unsealed and can have sections with deep ruts due to the water run off after rain. From Bark Hut Camping ground the road is sealed. There are a couple of camping areas within the park and these have flush toilets, hot showers, barbeque facilities and picnic tables (fees applies to camp within the National Park).

Here are a few things we did during our visit to Mount Kaputar National Park:

Euglah Rock Lookout - a short walk from the Bark Hut car parking area along a sealed track. Euglah Rock juts out above the treeline where bare volcanic rock has been exposed.
Governor Lookout with a sealed area to pull off the main road and park while enjoying a magnificent view over the valley.
Mount Kaputar viewing platform. Instead of following the sealed road to Dawson Spring Camping area turn left and take the dirt road to the lookout. This is a must when with a 360 degree views over the Nandewar Range and valleys in all directions. They say you can see 10% of NSW from here
Dawson Springs Camping area is just lovely. There are three cabins as well as camping and they are well appointed with each cabin allocated a name for easy identification. You can hear the creek running nearby and there a number of bush walks leading from the camping ground.
A little further along the road is Mount Dowe and another parking area to take a short walks to Eckford Lookout, Bundabulla Lookout and Mount Lindsay. We only took the short walk to Eckford Lookout which is about 1.8 kilometres return. This path has sections with boardwalks across delicate ground. The last part of the track near the lookout takes you across moss covered rock and a wetland area sitting on the top of a rocky outcrop. Water was trickling over the edge and the view was stunning. We met two large kangaroos in this section sitting near the path.

The road to the top is steep and narrow in parts but definitely worth the trip and highly recommended by the RvTrips team. Next time we would love to rent one of the cabins and spend more time exploring the longer walking tracks through this beautiful National Park.
